Targeting Zimbabwean migrants at funeral services: A disturbing trend in Hillbrow

6 hrs ago | Views
A disturbing trend has emerged in Hillbrow, where police are targeting Zimbabwean migrants at funeral services, arresting them, and demanding bribes ranging from R1500 to R3000. This practice has left many mourners traumatized, especially those who have recently lost loved ones.

The situation is particularly egregious, as mourners are being rounded up in front of funeral parlors, shoved into vans, and detained while grieving. The police's actions are not only inhumane but also add to the distress and trauma of those already vulnerable.

Imagine losing a child and being "kidnapped" by police in front of a funeral parlor, only to be detained and forced to pay a bribe to secure your release. The financial burden is also significant, especially when families are already struggling to cover funeral expenses.

We appeal to South African human rights organizations to help protect the rights of Zimbabwean migrants who are being unfairly targeted. This practice raises serious concerns about police conduct, corruption, and xenophobia.

We urge human rights organizations to investigate this matter, provide support to affected families, and work towards finding a solution to this crisis. The dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or immigration status, must be respected and protected.
