State media reports that the establishment of a multi-million dollar milk factory at the Gushungo Dairy Estate in Mazowe is at an advanced stage with the commissioning of the project expected early next month.
The venture which is a project of the first family, is a direct response to calls for value-addition to the country's agricultural products and the need to create more employment opportunities for the local communities and the nation at large.
Grace Mugabe said the establishment of the factory was necessitated by the fact that they were not happy with the prices that were being offered by the local milk processing companies.
The first lady said establishment of the venture was not easy due to the economic climate experienced in the country.
Construction work on the factory commenced in May 2010 and was completed in March this year.
The factory has a processing capacity of 120 000 litres of milk every 16 hours.
The complex includes the milk reception area, pasteurising section, homogenising area, standardising department where milk is put into different fat- content categories and the packaging section.
The factory produces milk-based and non-milk based products such as sour milk, yoghurts, fruit juices and mineral water.
Some of the products will be marketed in Harare and Chitungwiza.
