Mining company Mbada Diamonds has poured more than $20 million into philanthropic activities and was last week awarded the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) corporate social responsibility award, the Sunday Mail reported.

The ZNCC national awards, which were graced by Vice-President Joice Mujuru and top Government officials, came barely a month after Mbada Diamonds was crowned in three categories, namely the best exporter of the year, the best company working towards the empowerment of entrepreneurs and the best company with the biggest funds towards corporate social responsibility activities in Manicaland.

Mbada Diamonds corporate services executive Mr George Manyaya said the miner will continue to work towards the development of the country.

"We are harnessing diamonds for the people and it is befitting that the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce has honoured us. To ZNCC, we say we will continue working together for the development of our beloved Zimbabwe."

Mbada Diamonds invests several millions of dollars in corporate social responsibility activities every year.

Areas where Mbada Diamonds has largely been participating in include the construction and rehabilitation of community schools, rehabilitation of road networks, provision of  water through borehole drilling as well as provision of scholarships to academically gifted but financially challenged students.

The mining company has also constructed state-of-the-art houses for relocated families from Chiadzwa living at Arda Transau near Odzi.

In addition, Mbada Diamonds has elected to support local companies by reserving a number of tenders for them, including empowering small to medium scale enterprises.

Added Mr Manyaya: "We will continue with our corporate social responsibility investment initiatives and promise to touch all corners of the country. We have been in health, sport, education and environment, among other sectors."

"It is also my humble opinion that where teamwork is present, mountains are conquerable."

In Chiadzwa alone, more than 7 000 families benefit from the company's quarterly half-a-million-dollar food distribution exercise.
