A local construction company which won a tender to construct Manyame Bridge along Harare-Bulawayo road has hit back at Finance minister Tendai Biti's statement that it had been given $10 million in advance for the construction of the bridge.

Kuchi said the statement by Biti was a misrepresentation of facts as the budget for the Manyame Bridge is $2.7 million when complete and Kuchi Construction was not advanced $10 million in 2010 as mentioned in the Budget Review.

In a Press statement yesterday, KUCHI Construction said the statement by Biti was a misrepresentation of facts. "The budget for the Manyame Bridge is $2,7 million when complete and KUCHI Construction was not advanced $10 million in 2010 as mentioned in the Budget review," reads the statement.

"KUCHI Construction has from time to time financed acceleration of the works at the Manyame River Bridge, hence our commitment to see the project completed.

"As far as the Manyame River Bridge project is concerned, KUCHI Construction is the only contractor who offered to build the bridge when all contractors had failed and the construction company assures the public that the bridge will be completed ahead of the rainy season."

KUCHI group of companies was founded by businessman Oliver Chidawu.

In his 2010 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy review, Biti stated that $33,4 million was disbursed for road dualisation and $10,3 million for bridge construction, and work was already underway to complete the dualisation of the 5,7km Harare-Masvingo and 8,3km Harare-Bulawayo Road, including construction of Manyame and Mukuvisi bridges.
