One of the country's largest underwear manufacturers, Terenda (Private) Limited, has closed down as the influx of cheap imports took a toll on its operations.
Terenda is a subsidiary company of Shuler enterprises.
Speaking at the clothing Indaba last week, Shuler director Orian Mendes said the company had stopped manufacturing underwear due to the influx of cheap imports from South Africa and China.
She said in Zimbabwe, there used to be 12 underwear manufacturers, but only 2 small manufacturers have remained to date.
She said at its peak, Terenda used to make 60 000 units of underwear a month and the company used to supply over 180 big retail companies.
