KWEKWE Breweries, the brewer of Simba Beer, are back in business following the appointment of a new board and management team.

The City Council's director of Finance, Ms Rejoice Maweni, said Simba Beer was proving popular with imbibers because it was a "rich African brew".

She said the beer was available in Kwekwe, Redcliff and Gokwe for now.

"Simba Beer is so popular on the market to an extent that we are now facing challenges in meeting demand. Our challenge is mainly to do with supplying remote parts where roads are in a poor shape.

However, we are successfully supplying Redcliff, Kwekwe and its surrounding mining and farming communities as well as accessible parts of Gokwe. All our delivery trucks leave our depot filled to capacity but they will be empty when they come back from a trip," said Ms Maweni.

She said the city council managed to turn around the fortunes of the brewery after a shake-up of its management team and the board last year.

The brewery, which has a staff complement of 32 workers, is wholly owned by Kwekwe City Council.

Ms Maweni said Kwekwe Breweries had plans to venture into new markets in the Midlands and eventually across the country.

"We will be getting into Gweru soon. We have maintained our standards of giving our customers the best beer, which is rich in alcohol content and is well prepared by professionals. The beer can make you get drunk without living you in a bad shape. In the long run, we plan to get into Harare and reclaim our market share in areas like Chitungwiza where our brand used to be in high demand in the past. Our target is to penetrate all markets countrywide. We are targeting markets like Masvingo and Bikita, among others," she said.

Ms Maweni said Kwekwe Breweries will soon venture into mahewu manufacturing and offer their customers diverse products.

She said the brewery team was working on the mahewu formula.

"The mahewu brand will be out before year end. There is no stopping us this time around. We have a new board and management team that is led by a competent manager with lots of experience in the brewery industry," said Ms Maweni.

The city's town clerk, Mr Ngwena Musara, said in an earlier interview Simba Beer's popularity was mainly due to its traditional taste.

He said local people who preferred traditional beer easily identified with the beer.

"This is what makes our beer popular. It is brewed for the people by teams who understand what people want. In fact I advised the management team not to rush to break into new markets without first getting adequate resources to service a bigger market. Our strategy is to service a small market efficiently first before expanding. So far the plan is working accordingly and soon we will be in a position to service the whole country," said Mr Musara.
