South African supermarket chain Pick n Pay is set to open a branch in Masvingo, an official has confirmed. When a Chronicle Business crew visited the shop, haulage trucks full of commodities were parked outside with the local staff busy offloading stock.

Speaking in a telephone interview from Harare, general manager project planning and operations Mr Lameck Kunjeku said the shop which is operating from formerly TM Supermarket premises would open its doors to the public next week on Thursday.

"I can confirm that Pick n Pay will open a branch in Masvingo. We will open doors to the public on Thursday 24 October," he said.

The supermarket has taken over TM supermarket together with its entire staff.

"We are retaining all the staff and we have added new employees. I think we have added about 50 percent employees in addition to the existing ones and about 99 percent come from Masvingo.

"In actual fact, we never laid off workers who used to work for TM but all were on paid leave and we have called them back. They will all work under Pick n Pay," he said.

Mr Kunjeku said the shop would use the same old working hours used by TM Supermarket adding that customers will get value for money.

"We are sticking to 7am as our opening hours and we close at 8pm.  These will be convenient to our customers in addition we have designed a good parking space for the customers. There is also maximum security at the parking bay and our security personnel will be always alert," he said.

He said customers would stand a chance to win a number of prizes on the opening day.
"A number of prizes are lined up for lucky customers who will buy on the first day. In actual fact there are a lot of promotions that have been lined up by our marketing team and I encourage shoppers to come in their numbers on the opening day," he said.

He said the refurbishment of the shop was done satisfactorily and everything is now in order for the opening.
