The Malawian flag carrier, which was launched last month following the February 2013 folding of Air Malawi due to liquidity challenges, becomes the 14th airline to ply the Zimbabwe route.

Previously, there was no direct air link between Malawi and Zimbabwe and passengers had to go through Johannesburg, South Africa.

Malawian Airlines, whose headquarters are in Lilongwe will fly into Harare three times a week and will connect passengers to Lilongwe and Blantyre.

Malawian Airlines was formed through a strategic partnership between Ethiopian Airlines and the government of Malawi.

The Malawian government holds majority ownership of 51 percent while Ethiopian Airlines holds the remainder.
