Media, Information and Broadcasting Services minister Professor Jonathan Moyo says Telecel Zimbabwe has not been shut down, this follows widely circulated reports claiming that Cabinet has approved recommendations from the Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services ministry to close Zimbabwe's second mobile phone network on the grounds that it was operating without a licence and breaching the controversial indigenisation and empowerment laws.

From what has been unfolding in this playground fight for Telecel Zimbabwe, a pattern of misinformation and sensationalism has formed.

"Government Orders Telecel to Stop Operating," that headline was from the national broadcaster.

Reports are that the Minister of ICT has called for Telecel to stop operating because it doesn't have a licence and it is violating indigenisation laws.

It has since come to light that Telecel has not been shut down as the national press alleges.

In responsing to question on microblogging site twitter, Professor Moyo shed some light on what is happening at Telecel.

"Telecel has not been shut down as such. It's about finding business ways for the company to be in compliance with the law," said Prof Moyo.

Telecel has over 2,5 million active subscribers.
