20 Mar 2015 at 11:15hrs | Views
THIRTY THREE Meikles Limited workers in Bulawayo were today served with employment termination letters in a move that left them shocked.
Only ten workers were spared the chop.
The sacking is with immediate effect.
The workers reported for duty as normal this morning but trouble started after 10 am when they were issued with letters and told to leave the premises.
The sacked workers will be paid three months salary in lieu of notice period in the sum of US$1,002. In addition to the three months' salary, Meikles will pay them a sum of US$732 in appreciation of the services that they have rendered to Meikles. As at 31st March 2015 they will be paid US$255 as Cash lieu of leave.
In 2013 Meikles was forced to reverse its decision to retrench 55 workers after it was ordered by the Retrenchment Board to pay out almost US$ 1 million in retrenchment packages. The Retrenchment Board had proposed that Meikles pay a month and a half salary per every year served by the affected employees but the company challenged the decision saying the Board does not have power to impose retrenchment packages on them.
Below is a copy of the letter to a worker obtained by Bulawayo24.com:
The letter reads:
"This letter serves as notice termination of your contract of employment in terms of Section 12 (4) of the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01] either party is entitled to give three months notice of termination of the contract of employment. Accordingly, your contract will be terminated with effect from Friday 20th March 2015.
You will be paid three (3) months' salary in lieu of notice period in the sum of US$1,002. In addition to the three months' salary, the organisation will pay you a sum of US$732 in appreciation of the services that you have rendered to the organisation. As at 31st March 2015 you will be paid US$255 as Cash lieu of leave.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your services to the organisation and wish you the best in your future endeavors.
Yours sincerely
