Botswana's largest retailer, Choppies Enterprises is planning to open at least 30 supermarkets in Harare alone as part of the group's strategy to increase its footprint in the region.

This comes as the supermarket chain, which controls 15 percent market share in Zimbabwe recently opened two shops in Harare in addition to 18 others in Bulawayo. Choppies ultimately plans to open 60 supermarkets in the country.

As part of the expansion plans, they expect to open more stores in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe although the rate of expansion in Botswana is expected to slow.

The retailer has aimed to increase its footprint in South Africa as part of its Sub-Saharan strategy.
