Revenue that mobile network operators generated declined by 17.9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year while the number of base stations increased by 9.7 percent, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has said.

A recent report that Potraz released on mobile revenues showed that operators generated a total of $907,3 million last year, down from $1,1 billion
in 2013.

The most significant decline was experienced between the third and fourth quarters last year by at least $28,1 million.

"A comparison of the fourth quarter revenues with the third quarter shows a decline by 11,3 percent from $247,8 million generated in the third quarter of 2014 to $219,7 million generated in the fourth quarter of 2014," Potraz said.

It said the number of mobile base stations had grown in the course of the third and fourth quarters last year.

"The number of base stations increased by 400 to reach 4900 from 4500 erected the previous year," it said.

Potraz noted that mobile operators in Zimbabwe were still investing in 2G base stations and very little change had been seen in Long Term Evolution (LTE) structures commonly referred to as 4G base stations.
