The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has sent notices to ST Mary's residents who owes the power utility more than $1000 to settle their arrears if they wanted to continue having electricity
This was revealed by the Harare Residents Trust which said St Mary's residents with ZESA arrears of US$1000.00 and above have to pay up before they can continue using their prepaid meters.
"ZESA is complaining that the money they are receiving is too little in order to recover the debts," said the Trust.
Wellins Chimusimbe said it not only St Marys.
"Even Zengeza we have been cut off. Zesa's timing is so wrong, yes we owe them but where will we get the $100 plus minus that they require from us?" he said. "Schools are opening next week, many are not employed where will we get the money? All things being normal the greater party of the society does not enjoy living in debt. I see a rise in gas, solar and wood sales.
The HRT has engaged ZESA Control Centre about the challenges being faced by residents to buy electricity.
"To those who owe ZESA for example Mufakose area should go to Megawatt building and talk to the Credit Control for the payment of the debt within a period of twelve months. This is following a government directive and it has been announced on the national television, radio and newspapers," said the trust.
The Trust said residents across the suburbs are outraged by the decision taken by ZESA Holdings to deduct huge amounts of money from residents when they purchase electricity vouchers for prepaid meters.
"Several residents, HRT members in areas like Mufakose, Kuwadzana, Mabvuku, Chitungwiza have expressed fears that ZESA has now adopted a hardline stance to recover their debt in an arrogant manner yet had agreed to deduct 30 % for every transaction when buying electricity vouchers," said the Trust."Under this arrangement residents were expected to agree on payment plans with ZESA where they would have some of their money directed towards repayment of their debt owed to ZESA instead of being disconnected and being denied the right to buy electricity vouchers."
"ZESA and City of Harare, we are tired of your nonsense. The time has come for you to engage with the citizens in their numbers. Who are you fooling, trying to make residents' life impossible with your cruel and insensitive demands on debts? To hell with all tendency for reasonable engagement with you. Ready yourself in the communities. We have tried to reason with you but you appear more determined to punish people for being poor, yet the economic and social situation is worsening by the day," it added.
