The recent scraping of import duty rebates on locally available consumables is not going to affect prices, industry representatives and economists have said.

In Zimbabwe, the travelers rebate is a duty free allowance which is granted to bona fide travelers, subject to prescribed conditions, according to Zimra.

The duty free allowance of $300 per person granted on goods imported by travelers for their personal use no longer includes cooking oil, laundry bar soaps, beds and mattresses, flour, maize meal, sugar, meat, fish…, Zimra said inducing fears that the move was going to see prices spike as most local retailers import South Africa.
