Following the announcement by Energy minister Samuel Undenge last week that 40MW that had been dedicated to Sable Chemicals would now be diverted to residential areas, ZESA Holdings has switched off the Ammonium Nitrate manufacturer.
Sable Chemicals CE, Jack Murehwa, confirmed the development.
"We are off already. Zesa has switched us off. We have closed our plant. This has affected about 500 workers. There is nothing we can do. We have been engaging Zesa, but it failed. We will, however, engage government and see if we can reach common ground," he said.
The withdrawal of energy supplies means the company would stop manufacturing fertilizer as there is no alternative source of power.
The decision to withdraw power supplies to Sable Chemicals will result in 500 job losses.
