Zimbabwe is set to have a US$10 million bus assembly plant by mid this year.

The bus assembly plant, which is expected to employ a thousand Zimbabweans by 2017 and churn out not less than 500 buses per year, is a synergy between a local company, Granton Merriwell and Zhuhai Granton China.

The Chief executive of Granton Merriwell, Norman Manyewere says the plant will produce buses that are suited to the african terrain.

"The bus assembly plant will avail opportunities for Zimbabwean graduates to go to China for training on the bus assembly process. We also need to realise that the importation of buses from other countries also poses problems in terms of the terrains that they are suited to," said Mr Manyewere.

Manyewere said Zimbabwe's pursuit of the Look East Policy is bearing fruit and that the bus assembly plant also dovetails into government's policy on indigenisation and economic empowerment.
