European Union avails US$100m input facility for Zimbabwe farmers

Over 800 000 households are set to benefit from a $100 million input support facility availed by the European Union for the 2011-2012 summer cropping season.
The European Union has made a commitment to support the agricultural sector through a 100 million dollar facility made available to government ahead of the 2011 - 2012 summer cropping season.
Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister, Dr Joseph Made announced the latest development after meeting the European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr. Aldo Dell Aricia in the capital.
He said government has already started preparations for the forthcoming season adding that the development is a major boost as the timeous availability of inputs is critical in enhancing maximum productivity.
"I am happy to announce that we have agreed with the European Union to avail US$100 million for the summer cropping season and the inputs will be distributed fairly," said Dr Made.
The European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr. Aricia said the grouping will continue to support the country's agricultural sector as the global food prices continue to soar.
Mr Aricia said: "We remain committed to support programmes that promote food security such as these as the food prices continue to soar globally."
The meeting also discussed various issues such as the e. coli problem which has plagued Germany and some parts Europe.
On the revival of beef exports to the European Union, Dr Made highlighted that a technical team is expected to assess the situation regarding the foot and mouth disease, so that exports may be renewed.
