MULTI-AWARD-WINNING afro-jazz songbird Judith Sephuma is faced with the possibility of being a jailbird.

Sephuma might be charged with culpable homicide after she allegedly fatally ran over a 79-year-old Soweto granny in Mofolo yesterday morning.

Sources say Sephuma was driving along a Mofolo street at about 11am yesterday when she hit the pensioner, who was crossing over to the other side of the bustling street.

An eyewitness says Sephuma got out of her car and went to examine the bleeding gogo, who was lying prostrate on the street.

Police officers arrived at the scene and suggested that the internationally renowned chanteuse rush the injured woman to hospital. "She took her to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where she was admitted.

"It appears this old woman was comatose when she arrived at the hospital. You could see that she wasn't going to make it," says the eyewitness.

Sephuma then drove to Moroka Police Station, where she was sneaked into one of the offices to depose a statement.

"They didn't take her to the charge office to give a statement because she told them there were too many people who might start asking questions when they

see her. So she wanted to keep the whole thing a secret and didn't want it to be in the media," says our deep throat.

Our informant says Sephuma kept on praying for the granny's recovery while she made her statement.

"She was so emotional and her eyes where filled with tears," says the source.

Sephuma's world crumbled when she received the news that the old woman had died several hours later.

It is alleged that Sephuma, who is now married to intrepid photographer Sphiwe Mhlambi after divorcing jazz maestro Selaelo Selota, was so devastated that she wept uncontrollably.

Sunday World learnt that Sephuma has not appeared in court yet, as the prosecution authority is still trying to figure out what to charge her with.

Soweto police spokesperson Kay Makhubela confirms that the singer fatally hit a pedestrian on Monday.

"Initially she was charged with reckless driving and negligence.

"But the charge may be commuted to culpable homicide after the passing on of the pedestrian," he says.

Makhubela says the police are still gathering witnesses' statements and will wait for the postmortem report before they send it to the NPA for a decision whether to prosecute.

Efforts to interview Sephuma were unsuccessful.
