Sungura musician Alick Macheso said the lukewarm response to his album "Kwatakabva Mitunhu" will spur him to work hard.

In a wide-ranging interview, the humble musician, who struggles to knit his words together when talking, said a lot of initiatives were in store to improve his brand.

The veteran sungura king said people should not regard him as a spent force as he still had a lot to offer.

"I still have a lot to give my fans. I always try to give my fans new things. Zvimwe zvinova nhapitapi kunzeve asi zvimwe vanoti bodo. I will always try to go a step further," he said.

The "Zorai Butter" founder, who over the years has revolutionised the sungura beat, said he will continue to churn out new songs and dances for his fans.

"Our dances evolve on what we see everyday. Fans should brace for some new dances soon," he said. He added that in order to improve his brand, he was now reading literature, newspapers and magazines to find out how other artistes were branding their products and how they were eking out a living.

"We always read about these other artistes from other countries. I recently read about P Square that they bought a new home in Florida, United States. They also bought a private jet recently. They started recently and are already enjoying the fruits of their labour. I wish music was paying well here."

"I always read about how other artistes in some countries are doing. We are one big family. I take what is good and don't want to make some of the mistakes that some are doing," he said.

Ironically, for a man who has globe trotted, has fame and fortune, Macheso has got a lot of insecurities on the advent of the new crop of artistes, who are coming on board on a daily basis.

The sungura king acknowledged that a new generation of musicians was a threat to his "throne".

"I must say some of the new artistes we have in the country are good. I might say I have reached the pinnacle, but some of them are starting from where I am currently at taking the music into another level," he said.

On how he was managing to brand himself, the musician said performing at galas have enabled him to market his brand.

The musician has seen it all in the music trenches.

He is such a great leader on the stage where he commands his troupe with aptitude. He is a talented guitarist, vocalist and dancer. He is a great composer of songs, too.

Macheso has shown that he is an artiste par excellence, a good performer too yet he remains humble.
