Local comedian Nqobizita Sibiza, aka Q the Boss, stole the show at the inaugural Rainbow Comedy Festival at Rainbow Towers last Thursday night.

Sibiza, who came as an underdog in a show rich with top local and regional performers such as the award-winning Carl Joshua Ncube, Michael K (Michael Kudakwashe) as well as South African Jason and Donavan Goliath.

Q came in as the opening act after brief comic introductions by the host Ncube.

In the beginning of his performance, Sibiza took a swipe at the local audience that was attending a comedy show for the first time.

"I appreciate anyone who has been to a local stand-up comedy show, be it Simuka Comedy or Bang Bang.

"Shame on all those who are attending a comedy show for the first time because they heard there are some South African guys called Goliath and Goliath. I'm the David tonight," he said and went on to prove to be a thrilling performer.

Among other victims of his stinging comedy was Doctor Zobha, whom Q also took a jab at. Zobha was part of the audience that attended the comedy fest.

Second on stage was Jason who delivered a good set but failed to reach the bar set by his predecessor.

His comedy however, centred on relevant social issues including adultery, but lacked the spark which Sibiza had incited in the crowd.

Next up was one of the founding fathers of local comedy, Michael K.

He appeared to have come to prove the introductory assertion by Ncube who referred to him as the legend.

His strong stage presence, body language and great composure had the audience engrossed in his performance.

The jokes were mostly clean and appealing to both the young and the old and well-communicated, creating universal appeal.

The closing act, Donavan, gave a deserved seal to the night of great humour and excitement. As the headlining act, he took the crowd through his childhood memories growing up in Umtata, a remote area in Eastern Cape where he was the only coloured person in the area.

The Rainbow Comedy Festival, a first in the country, attracted a little less than a thousand revellers, which is by far the largest audience any comedy show has ever received in the country.

The event is expected to run four times each year from next year onwards.
