Leader of Umdumo Wesizwe passes on

Mqoqi 'Mxhe' Nkomo,  the leader and founder of one of Zimbabwe's most well known acts on the international tour circuit, Umdumo Wesizwe, has died.

In a statement, Sabela Music Projects, which runs the Umdumo Wesizwe project, revealed that Mqoqi, also known as Kento, died on Friday July 29, 2011, after a short illness.

Born 24 July 1978 at Mpilo Hospital, Kento was the second born in a family of 5 children. He did his primary education at Magwegwe Primary, Mahlabezulu Primary and Mabhukudwana Primary and then went on to do his Secondary education at Milton High School between 1992 - 1995.

Mqoqi played a leading role in the formation and existence of Amaqhawe Omculo, had a stint with Amabhubesi Juniors, and was the founder of Umdumo Wezilo  before moving on to start and lead the accapella group Umdumo Wesizwe in August 1994.

Among his professional achievements are winning the Old Mutual Choral Competition and coming in second in Amakhosi's Friday Live.

Mqoqi also collaborated with British singer Janet Wood and Umdumo Wesizwe for the album Together, Thina Sisonke. His silver Jubilee dedication to the people of Zimbabwe, called Prince and Princelo was never released. Mqoqi also initiated the twinning of his former primary school, Mabhukudwana with UK Primary school, Briggs Infant.

Sabela Music Projects has sent its condolence message to the talented artist.

Umdumo Wesizwe Facebook page is awash with condolence messages from all over the world, including from Janet Wood who posted, "Sending deeply felt love to you all."
