Comedian Carl Joshua Ncube has been nominated for the Fifth Annual South African Savannah Comic Choice Awards.

Carl, who has brought Zimbabwean comedy to the limelight through his innovation and rigorous marketing, is delighted to be in the running for the coveted awards.

"It is a huge deal just being considered. I know how much winning a Nama has done for my career so you can imagine the Comics Choice Awards, or any awards for that matter," he told the Daily News yesterday.

The award-winning comedian added that he is among 200 who will be subjected to a voting process.

"The awards register legible comics in the industry in South Africa and the people registered are put on the site and the public votes. This is still preliminary because over 200 comedians are up for public voting, two of those are Zimbabwean," he said.

"In other awards, the comics vote for each other. So the more people vote for me the greater chance I have of winning the award," he said.

The other Zimbabwean comedian in the running for the awards is George Kuda who is based in South Africa.

Kuda, who is relatively unknown in Zimbabwe, performs at several comedy nights including the Tswane Comedy Nights in Pretoria. He started his career in 2007 at Nomad Comedy's Open Mic Nights at Tony's Bar and Grill, Randburg.

Kuda has shared stages with renowned stand-up comedians such as Martin Jonas, John Vlismas, Vittoria Leonardi, Joe Parker, Alyn Adams, Chris Forrest, Ronnie Madimola, Many Knight (UK), Darren Maule, Trevor Noah and Al Prodgers.

The award categories up for grabs include The Savanna Newcomer Comic,  The Intermediate Comic (previously called the Breakthrough Act),  The Comics' Pen, which is now open to any professional writer or cartoonist, provided they get five  registered comics to nominate them, The Comic Of The Year, The Lifetime Achiever and The Savanna Audience Choice Comic.

The South African Savannah Comic Choice Awards nomination is a feather in the cap for multi-talented Carl who has built an illustrious career in comedy, cookery, graphic designing and other areas.

He once had a cooking show which broadcast on ZTV titled Carl Can Cook which has helped him secure a post to run Kadoma Country Cotton Inn. He is co-running the joint with his wife, Nelsy who is a big shot in the tourism and hospitality area.

Carl and Nelsy got engaged in 2010 in a typical "showman way" as he proposed to her during one of his shows dubbed The Big Announcement.

Nelsy, who manages Carl's comic career, used to work on a cruise ship and the two got married during one of Carl's travels, while Nelsy was at work. They were married on the beautiful Coco Cay in the Bahamas Islands at a lavish ceremony.

Carl, who is also an animator and a website designer, runs several websites, including his own and one for Country Inn.

For the past four years Carl has performed in South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Kenya and Australia.
