Black Umfolosi turns 30 this year

BLACK Umfolosi this year mark their 30th anniversary with shows planned around the country and outside the borders as part of the celebrations.
In an interview, director of Black Umfolosi Sotsha Moyo said their group would be celebrating 30 years working together.
"It is an achievement working together for 30 years and that is the main reason we are celebrating our 30th anniversary," he said.
Moyo said a few groups in Zimbabwe have been able to stand challenges and most of them had since disbanded.
"As Black Umfolosi we are proud of what we have achieved from 1982.
"We have managed to reach many continents in the world selling our Zimbabwean music and culture through song and dance," he said.
Moyo said Black Umfolosi managed to tour continents that include Europe, Asia and Africa.
"Black Umfolosi has been a true ambassador of Zimbabwe, as we have been able to visit different continents.
"During our tours we managed to teach different people how people associate in Zimbabwe," he said.
Moyo said it was unfortunate that they had not been able to complete their cultural centre, which they begun in 1995.
The cultural centre was meant to perfect the skills of up and coming youths from Entumbane and other surrounding suburbs.
"Entumbane Cultural centre was one of our major projects that we began way back in 1995 and we were supposed to wrap it up in 1997, but up to now it has not be completed," he said.
Moyo said they had only managed to construct an administration block, which is part of the project.
"The Entumbane arts centre is supposed to have an arts theatre hall and an administration block.
"This project was supposed to be completed in 1997 but due to financial constraints it has not been possible," he said.
Moyo said the arts centre was constructed with funds they got from the tours they embarked on since 1995.
"If well-wishers could take art as another form of business I think this project could have been completed a long time ago.
"The administration block that has been constructed was through the funds that were raised as Black Umfolosi single handedly," he said.
Moyo said as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations they were going to have shows in and outside Zimbabwe.
"We are set to have a couple of shows in and outside Zimbabwe as a way of commemorating our 30 years working together," he said.
Moyo said they still had the vision of completing their arts centre, which they also want to turn into a museum.
