JOHANNESBURG - Celebrated Isichamiya group Izinkanyezi Zezulu vocalist Mxolisi Mavundla tackles social injustices through his solo debut Maskandi album titled Kobandayo (In the land of the dead) which features popular Maskandi artist Bonakele Masango.
Released under the name Zinjaziyamluma, Kobandayo was recorded at David Studios and produced by Eugene Dube. The 10 track album's mega hits are: Nkosi yami, Usizi and Umbonaphi which features Bonakele. The album also urges Zimbabweans to respect traditional leaders whilst the title track remembers and is dedicated to his resting father and forefathers.
"People have to go back to their roots and respect traditional leaders for us to live in peace and harmony because without culture we are slowly drifting into other people's cultures and struggling to love and tolerate each other," said Mavundla.
"We grew up playing maskandi music a lot, hence I thought of bringing it close to the people because we were playing South African maskandi by then, I expect the album to do well and the footsteps of Izinkanyezi Zezulu to success," added Mavundla who is a composer, lead vocalist and lead guitarist.
Besides featuring Bonakele, Kobandayo's bass guitars are played by former Bhekumuzi Luthuli and Ihashi Elimhlophe bass guitarist Bukhalibembazo Bhengu.
