Eighteen-year-old Sibonginkosi Ncube was on Saturday evening crowned Miss National University of Science and Technology (Nust) 2014 at a colourful event held at the institution's Ceremonial Hall, beating 10 other contestants.

Bathabile Dlamini, a journalism and media studies student, was first princess and Portia Nyathi, doing medicine, was the second princess.

The beauty pageant saw Harare-based dancehall DJs Judgment Yard causing a 30-minute stoppage to proceedings as nearly 1,000 students that had gathered at the venue invaded the stage as Etherton B chanted on the mic.

While he was doing this the students rushed onto the stage jumping up and down as the dancehall tunes were pumping out of the speakers.

Nust security had a torrid time as they tried to restore order, with students having the time of their lives at the pageant. It was only after the intervention of Etherton B who asked the crowd to calm down that sanity returned to the venue.

In an interview after being crowned, an elated Ncube said she was pleasantly surprised to win and would represent the university well in the national finals.

"I am happy that I am Miss Nust. This is a great opportunity to be an inspiration to young women so that they aspire to achieve their dreams so that they empower themselves," she said.

Ncube said she was also in the running for Miss Professional 2014 and was confident she could juggle school and modelling.

"My ambition is to be an environmental scientist in the long run as I am doing my first year. Juggling modelling and college shows that I am good at multi-tasking. This gives me an added advantage going to the national finals," she said.

Outgoing Miss Nust Ratanang Noko, who is in her third year of Electronic Engineering, wished Ncube the best in her reign.

"I enjoyed my reign and I learnt a lot during my tenure. There were ups and downs but my persona grew and I learnt to stay positive all the time," she said.

Noko said she would continue with her community projects that she started, which include cancer awareness campaigns.

Bulawayo standup comedian Ntando Van Moyo made a cameo appearance as he was MC. Fashionista and musician Mbo Mahocs performed her track Kwanthuthu that was produced by DJ Lava.
