World-renowned dance group Iyasa put up a scintillating performance when they performed at Amakhosi's Dreams to Fame programme at the Amakhosi Cultural Centre in Makokoba on Saturday. The performance was part of their 10th anniversary commemorations. The group's director, Nkululeko Dube, explained why they chose the platform among others to celebrate their anniversary.
"We thought of giving back to the community which has supported us ever since our inception and Dreams to Fame was the ideal platform. "People couldn't believe that we are performing at Amakhosi as many last saw us performing on television due to the fact that many of our shows happen at night. The reception we have been given is humbling and motivating us to go all the way," said Dube.
Iyasa premiered their latest production titled Dancing With the Stars Part 2. The production takes people down memory lane with so much pace and energy exploring the cultural aesthetics which prevailed at that particular time.
"The production takes you way back in time and if you are young you just cannot help but marvel at the times and wish you were around, while if you are old you rewind the memories of the good old days," said Dube.
Dube also reminisced with nostalgia how the group got on its feet.
"It was at Amakhosi that we built our name when there used to be Friday Live at Amakhosi and almost 10 years later the group is still going strong. It's really humbling, we will visit those places which made us great, places like Mpopoma, Plumtree, Beitbridge and Swaziland," said Dube.
He also took time to reveal the secret behind their survival in the industry.
"Creativity is essential in this industry, one should thrive to be a pacesetter, you are able to do that by researching. As Iyasa we always bring something different and unique to our production that helps us stay in the business," he said. Born out of the famous Mpopoma High School drama club, Iyasa grew from strength to strength touring the world and giving a good account of the artistic talent found in Bulawayo.
