Miss Zimbabwe auditions flop

SOME parents in Lupane yesterday refused their daughters permission to audition for Miss World Zimbabwe citing that it would expose them to sexual abuse.

The search for the country's most beautiful woman kicked off on a low note in Matabeleland North with only 15 girls turning up for the auditions. Five were selected and will be travelling to Harare next month for Miss World Zimbabwe boot camp if their parents sign the indemnity forms.

Some parents went to the audition venue to witness proceedings and barred their children from contesting saying the modelling industry had no morals.

"I'd love my daughter to take part in this competition but I fear that it will cause moral decadence. I've heard stories of models careers being ruined after taking part in these shows so I wouldn't want my daughter to be part of this," said a parent who could only be identified as Mai Sharon.

Poor publicity was partly to blame for the low attendance as some aspiring models started trickling in towards the end of the auditions.

"We didn't know about the auditions and only heard from some friends who saw activity at the university," said one of the girls who went to audition but failed to make it Some of those who turned up did not meet the Trust's criteria as most of them were too short.

The scouting team only took those who were between 18 and 26 years old, single, 1,71m tall, never married and slim.

Miss Zimbabwe Trust spokesperson Tendai Chirau said their wish was to find a queen from the rural areas.

"It's our desire that Miss World Zimbabwe comes from the rural areas because in the past winners came from either Bulawayo or Harare," he said.

Chirau said although there was a low turnout yesterday, the scouting team was impressed with the quality of aspiring contestants.

"The team is impressed with the way people responded and showed interest in the auditions," he said.

Today the scouting team will be in Matabeleland South for auditions at Gwanda Polytechnic before heading to Bulawayo for auditions tomorrow at Bulawayo Rainbow hotel.
