Mpopoma-born Zimbabwean filmmaker Sunu Gonera continues his ascendancy in South Africa where he recently won an award for directing Khuli Chana's One Source video during South Africa's 2017 Bookmarks, that country's premier digital awards.

The latest accolade comes after the music video was nominated for a Metro FM Award and featured on multiple best music video of 2016 lists.

The One Source music video, which is part of Vodka brand Absalut's advertising campaign was shot in Ghana and featured Ghana's Sarkodie and Zeal from VVIP alongside Kenya's Victoria Kimani, among others.

Gonera currently works for South Africa's Egg Productions.

The University of Cape Town-educated Gonera is not a new name in the world of film or video making, having directed the star studded film, Pride, which starred Terrence Howard, Kimberly Elise, Bernie Mac among others.

After award winning works for such brands as Nike, VW, Coca Cola and U.S Tennis Association, the former banker sold his house in South Africa and decided to take a crack at Hollywood in 2006, a move that did not work out in the long run as he was forced to trek back to South Africa again in 2013.

However, according to Gonera, the move gave him invaluable experience in the world of filmmaking hence his resurgence.

"It was the best of times and the hardest of times. The most important thing is that it gave me a perspective of myself and what I was capable of, but also that my Africanness is what made me unique in a world that tries to squash you into a box.

"I came back with a fire and passion to really dig deep into Africa, into who we are as Africans and our unique spice, attitude to life and how we don't have to sit shotgun or play second fiddle to the West," he told trueafrica.com during an interview in which he unpacked the vision behind the Khuli Chana video.
