One of Zimbabwe's most well-known musical couples, Tendai Manatsa and Selmor Mtukudzi are no longer together- musically, the ZimboJam.com reported yesterday.

The two told Zimbo Jam that they had decided to pursue different musical paths but that they remain solidly together as husband and wife.

"We wanted to stand on our own," Selmor said, "we felt there was so much more we could deliver individually."

Sandra Mtukudzi, Selmor's manager, said, "They are two unique artists, and we felt that they were not really doing justice to their talent by being together as performers."

Selmor launches a new solo album on February 27 at the Zimbabwe German Society. She said that it was a project that was very close to her heart. "For me this album - it's called 'Expressions' -  is very personal. It's like me becoming myself more, opening up and starting to show who I really am. It talks about stuff that is close to my heart."

She explained some of the songs on the compilation. "There is one song called 'Ropafadzo', based on the story that was in the press sometime ago about a little 7-year old girl who was raped by her uncle  and after that went out propositioning men for sex."

Selmor has been doing some work with the Girl Child Network and so she knows firsthand the stories of young girls dealing with rape and other forms of abuse. "It's really sad," she says.

Going back to her album, "Another one is called 'Amai' and it's for my mother. The idea of the song is me trying to say thank you to her but I don't know how. There is nothing comparable to her love and support. She's been there for me through and through, in good times and bad. In the song I am asking should I buy you a house or an aeroplane, etc. to show my gratitude."

And what will Tendai be doing? The talented lanky guitarist's job for now is to make sure that his wife succeeds. "For now I am going to be supporting Selmor," he says. "I want to help her get on her feet then afterwards I will focus on my own album. I will be taking care of her production as well."

Tendai and Selmor have been performing together since 2005. They have two albums together, 'Ndinewe- I am with You' and 'Tendai and Selmor Live'. Prior to this they had each recorded one solo album, 'Kudzoka Kwabababa' and 'Shungu' respectively.
