FOLK musician, Steve "Dhongi" Makoni, is back in the studio and is currently working on a new album.
The new offering, the Rusape-based composer said, was set to hit the market during the first quarter of this year. Titled Munibho, the forthcoming album carries eight tracks and an additional bonus two, which fans requested him to include on the compilation. It is his overall seventh.
In an interview on Tuesday afternoon, the solo guitarist told The Weekender that the call had actually come in the middle of his practise session.
"I am currently putting together a new album which is due for release at the end of March or beginning of April. Munibho simply refers to someone who was born and bred in the city, commonly referred to as 'born location' in slang. The compilation derives its title from the local lingo and has a Vengere (Rusape's most populous suburb) identity to it which many locals can identify with because it is prevalently spoken here and it seeks to relive the heyday.
"The album will carry eight core tracks and I shall also include two other songs as per my fans' requests, who demanded that I contain the songs on the compilation. Munibho should have something for everyone since it reflects and crystalises some the daily happenings in our social lives and I deliberately sang it in both Shona and English so as so to appeal to a cross-section of bilingual fans," said the Handiende hit maker, popularly known by his fans as Dhongi; a name taken after one of his earliest hits.
Some of the songs fans can look forward to enjoying on the forthcoming project include Kurairwa Haunzwe, Raining On My Parade, Dreams of a Poor Man, Ivory Tower and Bambo. The latter is the Manyika version of senior superstar, Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi's timeless classic Tozeza.
