A member of the chart topping Born Free Crew, Allan Mapisa, has died.

According to the police Mapisa (27) died on the spot while four other people he was travelling with were seriously injured when the Toyota Chaser he was driving collided head on with another vehicle in Harare early yesterday morning.

Acting national traffic police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Julius Chakanza revealed that Mapisa's vehicle collided head with an oncoming Volvo sedan along Blantyre Road.

"He was travelling towards Borrowdale when his Toyota Chaser had a head on collision with a Volvo coming from the opposite direction.

"Allan, who was driving, died on the spot while four others escaped with injuries," he said.

The musician's mother Mrs Agnes Mapisa last night spoke of her pain. It is painful my son has been robbed from us at a tender age. I don't know why this has happened to him because we just celebrated his birthday on 11 July," she said.

Colleagues who worked with the late musician and House of Gushungo marketing director described him as patriotic youth.

Mapisa was one of the brains behind the Gushungo clothing merchandise which includes overalls, caps, berets, T-Shirts and umbrellas which bear President Mugabe's signature.

House of Gushungo director Mr Justin Matenda said he was shocked by the death of his colleague.

"We have lost a charismatic visionary who stood firm for the country's youth empowerment drive and his death is a sad loss to the Born Free Crew, the Gushungo Fashion stable and the nation at large," he said.

Mapisa's death comes at a time when the Born Free crew has just released a new album titled Backward Never.

Mourners are gathered at 2 Winstone Close, Hatfield.
