Rhumba giant, Kofi Olomide and local crowd puller, Winky D expected to light up President Mugabe's bash did not show up, leaving thousands disappointed.
Olomide had agreed to come but got caught up in flights difficulties while Winky D just decided not to come.
The man co-ordinating the bash Rtd Major Mutambudzi explained the circumstances surrounding the non-appearance of Kofi Olomide and Winky D, both who were pencilled in to perform at the inauguration bash.
As for Olomide, the band, which comprised 22 band members, received clearances from their home affairs ministry when they were already at the airport but the Kenyan Airways plane had closed its doors. It is a legal requirement for Congolese citizens to apply for permission to leave the country, according to Rtd Major Mutambudzi. When they checked the next available plane, the earliest the group could have landed in Harare was lunch-time Friday, which made the option a non-starter.
As for Winky D, Rtd Major Mutambudzi said they had agreed performance fees with the artistes and they were as surprised as everybody else when he did not turn up.
"When we made inquiries, we were told he was in Victoria Falls and honestly we don't know why he chose to shun such a historic event for the nation."
