Zimbabwe's most internationally renowned music ambassador, Oliver Mtukudzi, is planning a greatest hits concert in Harare on April 17, the eve of Zimbabwe's Independence Day celebrations. It will be his first concert in the country after he returns from his three month tour of the United States, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom.
The Greatest Hits Concert is being put together by Tuku Music in partnership with ZiFM Stereo, Impala Car Rental and Zimbo Jam and will see fans decide on the songs that will be performed during the show.
The partners have also put together various competitions to enable members of the public to win tickets to the show, trips to some of Zimbabwe's top tourist destinations, visits to Tuku's Pakare Paye Arts Centre and other prizes.
"The idea of the concert came about because we always get people asking us why we don't perform certain songs at our shows," said Tuku.
"So we decided to give the fans a chance to tell us which songs they want us to perform at this show. All the top songs that they see as our greatest hits, we will perform on the night."
He explained the partnerships as part of the long term vision that Tuku Music has to support various projects that would benefit the music industry.
"As Tuku Music we can only do well if we build great relationships with our fans and other partners. We have brought in ZiFM, Impala Car Rental and Zimbo Jam as part of our vision for some of the long term projects we have that will help build support structures for the music industry through our work at Pakare Paye," he said.
One of the campaigns leading up to the Greatest Hits Concerts will see 20 lucky fans win a tour of the Pakare Paye Arts Centre to see the work being done there. This will be topped off by lunch with Tuku himself at the centre's restaurant.
Tuku and his band, The Black Spirits are currently in the United States of America on a whirlwind tour that will see them performing in ten States and then at the African Music Festival on the idyllic Caribbean island of Montserrat before they head to the United Kingdom for shows on March 21 and 22. They will then head back home to prepare for the April show.
Tuku, who is a UNICEF Ambassador, was also just recently awarded a Global Service Award by the Skagit Valley College in the United States for his "tireless devotion as a champion for the rights of the children in Africa."
