London-based Zimbabwean journalist/writer, Brian Moyo's newly released CD of Marabi music entitled: Ziyaduma - Marabi Revival has been well received by music experts in the UK and South Africa.
The CD will be officially launched in London this Friday.
Wala Danga, the renowned Zimbabwean DJ and music promoter based in London said although he had only listened to two tracks from the CD, so far, he had been impressed by the quality of the songs. "It is wonderful music, refreshingly good and it brings out the memories of yesteryears. The CD is also well arranged and well produced."
Moyo, who is a self-taught armature musician, plays piano and guitar on all the five tracks, four of which are his original compositions.
Moyo says he composed the music to remind himself of the "good old days" when music groups belted out Marabi tunes across the sprawling Bulawayo townships when he was growing up.
"In the 1970's when I was a youngster in Bulawayo, every township had at least one Marabi band," Moyo said. "Regrettable, you don't hear that music anymore. I missed it so much that I decided to compose my own music in that genre."
Olivia Sambo, a presenter and producer on South Africa's SABC had gushing praises for Moyo's music after listening to one of the tracks, Bulawayo Jive. She said: "The music put an instant smile on my daughter's face. It's beautiful!"
Nomfundo Xulu, a production Editor at Trudon (pty) Ltd in South Africa described Bulawayo Jive as 'a thoroughly enjoyable jolly song.' "Its the sort of music you expect to hear at a wedding or party," Xulu said.
Elliot Ngubane, a seasoned South African music promoter based in London said: "I can't wait to buy the CD!"
The five track CD includes "Otsotsi" which Moyo considers one of the most loved and enduring marabi tunes of his generation.
The CD was arranged and produced by Zimbabwe veteran musician, Calvin Gudu, of the "Tombofara" fame.
"I can't thank Calvin enough for helping me realise my dream in compiling this CD," Moyo said. "He not only engineered the tracks but also played organ and guitar to support me. He has an exceptionally good ear for music."
Moyo, a former News Editor at the Bulawayo Chronicle settled in the UK in 1990. He worked for various newspapers and magazines in London before setting up his own website, Touch Base Africa and working as a consultant editor.
Ziyaduma - Marabi Revival," will mainly be distributed through Moyo's website www.touchbaseafrica.co.za
