'Prostitutes better than rappers'

AWARD winning hip hop artiste POY, real name Nicholas Muchinguri, has attacked rappers who charge a pittance for their work, saying prostitutes have survived harsh economic hardships as they are wiser than most rappers in the country. The Bulawayo two-time Zim Hip Hop award-winning rapper said this after launching his single keSummer, that features MC Chitta at Horizon Night Club on Saturday night.
He said prostitutes, whom society looks down upon, follow sound business practices as they do not offer their services for free and also move with the times. "Even a prostitute is more educated than most rappers because she'll charge you for each service rendered. She'll tell you that if you want to sleep with me, it's this amount," said POY.
He said rappers should stop volunteering their services to music promoters or charging what he called "sick money". "Surely the industry won't grow if we charge sick money like $50 for a performance. What can one do with $50, really? This volunteer mentality kills the hip hop industry at the end of the day," said POY.
He said if artistes charge what they are worth they could use the money to invest in the production of their music.
"If I'm a brand that's valuable then I can go into a club and get paid for a performance there. I can use the money I'm paid to perform to buy quality studio equipment that'll in the end contribute to the production of quality music for the audience and fans to enjoy," said POY.
He said hip hop musicians should emulate their Zimdancehall counterparts who have mastered the art of making money from their music. "The dancehall artistes have figured out the formula of making money and investing it in their music. Even if they get $50 a day from selling their CDs and capitalise from their live performances, they use the money to invest in the production of their music," said POY.
He said the solution was to have a standard price for performances for all artistes. "The only solution is for artistes to have one standard price for 15 minutes on stage, like $500. I'm saying so because some will sell themselves short to promoters as they'll charge measly prices for their performances," said POY.
Turning to his musical career, POY said he was launching the single keSummer featuring MC Chitta as a party track for the summer season. "The single is to usher in the summer season and the festive mood. The song is doing great on Star FM as it is number one on the TXO hip hop top five hosted by Otis Fraser," said POY.
"The music video will be out at the end of October and will be shot in Bulawayo and produced by Blaqs."
He said he was hard at work in the studio to come up with a deluxe version of his award winning album Blood Money Jacob released last year that was produced by fellow hip hop artiste Cal_Vin.
