Multi-award winning South African rapper, Cassper Nyovest (real name Refiloe Phoolo) who was in Harare over the weekend says he feels threatened by up-and-coming Bulawayo hip hop artiste, Cal_Vin as he sees a lot of potential in him.

The 'Doc Shebeleza' hit-maker who, a few months ago, collaborated with Cal_Vin for a remix of Zikhupani suggested that the local rapper could be successful if he joins the South Africa music industry.

"My favourite Zimbabwean rapper is Cal_Vin . . . when I listen to his material, I really feel intimidated. If he was to rap in South Africa, he'd be greater."

Cassper who is organising a concert – Fill up the Dome – in his country to promote a culture of supporting local content there said, like them, artistes in Zimbabwe needed support from their home country to make it big.

"I think Zimbabwean music should be played more so that people can appreciate it."

The fast-rising platinum-selling artiste, who shared the stage with Cal_Vin in April during his first concert in Bulawayo, said it was saddening that Zimbabweans appreciated his music more than music from their artistes.

"It shocks me to realise that many Zimbabweans are familiar with my music and not his (Cal_Vin).

"There's need for change in structures within the Zimbabwean system, to push more of local artistes content," Cassper said.

He suggested that a policy be made so that more local content is played on national radio stations.

"Perhaps there should be a reduction in airplay of our (South African) songs and giving more play to local artistes," he said.

While in Harare, Cassper, a humble artiste, who was the headline act at the Shoko festival, took time to party with former Miss Zimbabwe-cum-musician, Vanessa 'Queen Vee' Sibanda last Friday.

He went on to party at a new up-market club, Pablo's, where he took to the decks to entertain revellers.

Asked about preparations of his 'Fill up the Dome' concert, which Cal_Vin hopes to emulate, Nyovest said everything was going according to plan.

The concert which he hopes to be a sold out show will be held at a prime concert venue – TicketPro dome in Johannesburg, South Africa on October 31.

"The concept of Fill up the Dome is just to show people how we've South African stars that we can appreciate as much as we appreciate the western culture and American rappers," Cassper said.
