Tuku, friends light up carnival

Star musician Oliver Mtukudzi and his musician friends on Friday showcased delightful melodies at a packed Harare International Carnival music concert held at the Glamis Stadium in Harare.
With all colour and manner of audiences the musical concert rose to expectations as a cool breeze whizzed around the stadium cooling hot temperatures that have been witnessed in recent days.
The carnival mood was evident as wholesome families boogied all night to various music genres also powered by a number of local DJs led by reggae radio and club record spinner Templeman - The God Father.
But the night belonged to Tuku.
Tuku's many friends who included sungura singer Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah, Bob Nyabinde, Picky Kasamba, XQ, Roki, Afrika Revenge and Munya Mataruse among others joined the music star on stage collaborating on various songs which sent crowds wild.
Forgotten song chanter Potato also made a surprise appearance and crowds loved his chants.
Tuku, who recently turned 63, led the pace and energetically danced with almost all of his musician friends to the delight of the audience, hence defying his age.
Popular radio and stage comic artist Dr Zhobha also collaborated with Tuku on the song Chirimupoto, an old tune the music superstar always promptly sings when the comedian who had in the past mocked him over the song is around.
While on radio Dr Zhobha had always teased the song's simplicities but the musician has fought back by ambushing the comedian and inviting him to the stage where they sing it together.
Another special treat in the offing was when Tuku reunited with former band member and co-dancer Kasamba.
The duo's dances were so polished and reminded many of the golden old days when Kasamba was still part of the Black Spirits.
The Tuku/Kasamba stage combination is something Mtukudzi's management should seriously consider as their stellar dancing has proved hard to surpass.
Even Tuku's two female backing vocalists who usually partner the music star for dances at his shows could not contain the duos' antics and stage prowess.
Sungura musician Peter Moyo and his Utakataka
Express Band also performed as a solo act and most of his songs must have reminded many of the late Tongai Moyo.
Just like the reunion of Tuku and Kasamba which was quite a spectacle, there were wild cheers as "Young Igwe" Peter Moyo reunited with toaster Shiga Shiga who had earlier left the band leaving it with little sparkle.
Shiga Shiga, who used to perform with the late Tongai, has brought back life to Peter's stage act as witnessed at the recent Harare International Carnival gig where the Congolese was a toast as he introduced a new act in which he rhymes while reading from a big book.
