South Africa's  kwaito star Mandoza who was reported to be battling with cancer has admitted that he was at some point battling with the deadly ailment but said his battle has succeeded as he is now free from it.

The Nkalakatha hitmaker was reportedly back in hospital for an operation allegedly fighting cancer.

The award-winning singer, real name Mduduzi Tshabalala, confirmed to Sunday Sun that he had been battling cancer. "Yes, I had cancer but now I'm cancer free," said Mondoza.

He said he had skin cancer.

"I went for an operation in November last year. I completed the treatment earlier this year," said Mandoza, who was spotted with pigmentation marks on his face.

His wife, Mpho, said it was a victory for the family.

"I'm very proud of him that he fought it," she said.

The star said he had been in and out of hospital to remove the cancer.

The couple refused to talk more about the cancer.

Last year it was reported on several occasions that Mandoza spent the better part of last year in hospital.

But a source close to the Soweto-born artist confirmed Mandoza has recently gone for a major operation to remove cancer cells.

The source said Mandoza is doing fine and is trying to get back in the game.

The source said Mandoza kept his cancer a secret because he didn't want to attract unnecessary attention to himself.

The source added Mandoza is partially blind in one eye after the operation because the cancer affected his eye.

"He's fine though. It's not big because he can see with his other eye. Life goes on," the source said.

The source said Mandoza is optimistic about life, his health and his family – which is his top priority.

The source said the singer has recovered well and was spotted in Cape Town this past weekend looking happy.

"Mandoza doesn't play victim. He accepts things and moves on. Therefore, he didn't want to put his personal business out there," said the source.
