Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was admitted to hospital at the weekend for a medical procedure, the University of Cape Town (UCT) said on Monday.
UCT spokesperson Patricia Lucas said Tutu was scheduled to appear at a graduation ceremony on Monday morning, but could not attend because he had not been discharged.
Tutu was supposed to receive the Graca Machel Chancellor's Award for Continental Leadership at the ceremony.
"Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will not be attending the graduation ceremony this morning at the University of Cape Town, as he has not been released from hospital following a medical procedure over the weekend," Lucas said.
Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza, the chairperson of the Desmond Tutu Peace Trust, confirmed to Sapa that Tutu was in hospital but said he had no further details.
He referred queries to the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre whose spokespeople were not immediately available for comment.
Tutu celebrated his 80th birthday in October.
