Cape Town - A South African woman has been executed in China for smuggling drugs into that country, eNews reported on Monday.

Janice Bronwyn Linden, 35, was executed by lethal injection.

She was caught carrying 3kg of crystal methamphetamine at a Chinese airport in November 2008, and had reportedly exhausted all possible appeal processes.

Linden, from KwaZulu-Natal, was only told that she would be put to death on the morning of her execution.

According to Sapa, two of her sisters are in China, and were to be allowed an hour with her before she was put to death.

On Sunday, the DA called on President Jacob Zuma to make a last-minute attempt to save Linden's life.

"Drug mules should be punished for what they do. But this is clearly a case of a punishment not fitting the crime," said DA MP Stevens Mokgalapa.
