South Africa's 80-year-old, Archbishop Desmond Tutu was in hospital Monday after undergoing "a minor surgery" at a Cape Town hospital on Friday, his office said.

"He is recovering in hospital after undergoing an elective surgery on Friday. It was a minor surgery," his spokesman Rodger Friedman said.

He said they expected him to be released in a day a two.

"He is recovering very well, nothing major," he added.

In 1997, the charismatic Nobel Peace Prize laureate was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent successful treatment in the United States.

"The Arch", as he is fondly known, was supposed to be honoured with a continental leadership award by the University of Cape Town on Monday evening.

In October, Tutu celebrated his 80th birthday in a ceremony attended by high profile figures such as Bono.

The former clergyman is seen as a moral beacon for South Africa and is known for his role in the fight against apartheid.

He later chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which investigated human rights abuses that took place during the white minority rule.
