Former South African president Nelson Mandela is doing well, his personal chef said on Wednesday.

Mansdela moved from Johannesburg to Qunu, where he was born, a few days before his 93rd birthday on July 18.

"He is fine, he is enjoying home in the countryside, he is fine, he is doing very, very well," Xoliswa Ndoyiya told AFP.

Ndoyiya was in Johannesburg to promote her cook book on Mandela's favourite food, entitled Ukutya Kwasekhaya: Tastes from Nelson Mandela's Kitchen.

The anti-apartheid icon first returned to his rural home in June after being discharged from hospital in January for an acute respiratory infection.

At the time he was said to be receiving round-the-clock medical care.

His last public appearence was during the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg, where he was wheeled in and waved joyfully to the crowd.

Mandela was elected the country's first black president in South Africa's first all-race vote in 1994 and served one term before stepping down in 1999.
