A cash-in-transit heist near Rustenburg left passers-by scavenging for money. G4S plans to take legal action against those positively identified, based on footage that went viral this week.
"G4S will lay criminal charges against any looters that can be positively identified," said Communication Consultant, Wendy Hardy, in a statement issued to News24.
North West Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the incident took place on Monday at around 17h00 GMT.
"Ten heavily armed robbers ambushed a G4S van that was travelling between Northam and Rustenburg in the North-West", said Hardy.
The security officers were forced out of the van at gun point.
"The van carrying an undisclosed amount of money was ambushed by armed men carrying explosives," said Mokgwabone.
In a video shared on social media, passers-by are seen running to the abandoned van and taking whatever loose notes they could find on the ground and inside the shattered van.
"The process contaminated the crime scene, and has made it difficult to find clues," he added.
The robbers fled the scene with the undisclosed amount of money.
