Kano - Gunmen have shot dead a senior police officer in charge of a special squad to fight robbery in northern Nigeria's Adamawa state, police said on Saturday.

"The officer was shot dead around 13:00 by three gunmen who came on a motorcycle at an open car showroom," Adamawa state police commissioner Adenlere Shinaba told AFP of Friday's incident in Yola, the state capital.

He said Muhammad Ali, an assistant superintendent of police, was the head of a special unit to fight robbery in the state.

He did not say who the killers were, but the Islamist Boko Haram sect has been blamed for a wave of deadly attacks targeting the police and other symbols of authority in Nigeria in recent months.
