Algerian police on Saturday arrested Ali Benhadj, co-leader of the banned extremist Islamist Salvation Front (FIS), following his participation in the anti- government march, said a source.

The police arrested Benhadj, who was among the protesters in Algiers downtown on Saturday, said the source.

Algerian authorities have banned Benhadj from political activity since he was released in 2003 after serving 12 years in prison under charges of calling for civil disobedience.

In late 1991, FIS won the first round of parliamentary elections, which were then called off by the regime with the support of the military.

Hundreds of protesters took part in the pro-democracy march in Algiers on Saturday, which is called on by National Co-ordination for Change and Democracy and has been banned by the government.
