Johannesburg - South African police are investigating a case of incest after a Soweto man allegedly fathered up to three of his daughter's children, The Star reported on Wednesday.

The daughter, 33, and her three children, aged 15, two, and five-months, lived with the man, in his early 60s, in Soweto.

He allegedly also attempted to have sex with his two other daughters, older and younger than their sister, but they denied him.

Relatives said they became suspicious in 2000 when one of them caught the middle daughter locking herself in the man's bedroom while her mother was away.

The mother died in November last year, reportedly from heart failure.

"Whenever I asked her about it (the abuse), she would just cry and tell me to leave her alone as I would cause her to die of a heart attack," the man's oldest daughter was quoted as saying.

The middle daughter initially denied the abuse, but later admitted to it in a fit of ranting.

"What's the problem if he sleeps with me? It actually feels good, you know," The Star quoted her saying in a telephonic interview.

The alleged sexual abuse reportedly began when the middle daughter was in her early teens, after the father gave her money and gifts. The man apparently later threw the younger daughter and mother out of the house.

"Sometimes I try to forget about the whole thing and not involve myself. But I feel pain when I think about how my mother used to sleep in the toilet and how she died because of suffering," one of the daughters told the newspaper.

The youngest daughter had been taken to a place of safety by the Gauteng social development department.

"Given the current wave of sexual offences, it is clear that South Africa is grappling with a serious moral dilemma," department spokesman Sello Mokoena told the newspaper.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said: "An inquiry has been made, and the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit has already obtained a statement from the victim and is investigating these allegations."
