Unidentified gunmen have attacked the residence of Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila but six were killed by his guards, a government spokesman said.
Kabila was in the area at the time of the attack, launched at around 1:30 pm (12H30 GMT) on his home in the Gombe area of the capital Kinshasa where foreign embassies are also located, the official said.
"The residence of the president ... was attacked by a group of men who have still not been identified," spokesman Lambert Mende told AFP.
"Six assailants were killed and some others have been taken prisoner," he said.
"The attackers were heavily armed. The president was in the area," he said, without giving details.
He said calm had returned to the area.
Soldiers from the president's guard patrolled outside the residence in small groups, an AFP journalist said. Armored vehicles and a tank patrolled the area.
