A male nurse has been arrested in South Africa for allegedly raping a pregnant patient at an Eastern Cape hospital, the provincial health department said on Monday.
The 25-year-old complainant was admitted to Taylor Bequest hospital in Mount Fletcher last week with complications during her pregnancy.
"It is alleged that the patient complained about constipation and requested help from the nurse," said spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.
"[The nurse] assisted her on Friday and when she again experienced the same problem on Saturday, he allegedly ordered the patient to go to the toilet.
"That is where the alleged rape took place."
Kupelo said the nurse, aged 45, was due in court in Matatiele on Monday.
The Eastern Cape health department was planning to suspend him.
"We will not allow him to consult with the patients until the investigations are completed," said Kupelo.
