Gaddafi forces down a US F-15E fighter jet

In the first apparent air force casualty of the campaign, a US F-15E was downed in Libya overnight and its two crew members were rescued, the US military said. US military officials are downplaying the crash and they are claiming that it was likely caused by mechanical failure and not hostile fire.
Even though American military officials are attributing this to a mechanical fault, most commentators are a bit sceptical about it with one posting a the following comment on CNN:
