FIVE little friends were playing happily in the yard when a white Mercedes Benz crashed through the fence and knocked them down.
Two kids, Kagiso Masemola (7) and Reason Moyo (2), who is said to be a Zimbabwean, were killed and two are in a critical condition at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
One of the injured kids was identified as Onleile Kwapeng (6) but the other injured kid's identity is not known as he was visiting his friends at Diepkloof, Soweto.
Kagiso's mum, Maureen Masemola, said: "My son was loved by all those who knew him. I never had a chance to say goodbye to him because he was declared dead on the scene."
A witness, Sophy Selepe, said: "I saw the car from a distance and it was out of control. The car crashed into the yard where the kids were playing. I then saw the driver, who looked about 35 years of age, carrying one of the kids as I approached. But then he put the kid down again and ran away. It was a miracle that any of them survived because of the impact that the car made in the yard," she said.
Thabo Thamai (5) was pulled out from under the car. His mother, Manaiki, said: "I sympathise with the other kids' parents who were not so lucky. I know what they are going through because I was devastated when my boy was pulled from under the car."
Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said no arrests have been made yet. The suspect is still at large and a culpable homicide docket was opened.
